Newborn Supplies

Having a new baby is no inexpensive process. The good news is you do not need all of these things at once, so forget about having to take out a second mortgage. Now for the second tidbit of good news, you don't need ever product you see on TV or in those all hype parent magazines.

Food Supplies

If you're planning on breastfeeding you are still going to need bottles for giving the baby water after breastfeeding, or when it's just a little needed to quench your babies thirst. Also for those times when someone else will be feeding the baby when you're not around .

There is a moderate selection of different types of bottles and nipples. Honestly, your baby won't care with whatever design the bottles are. There are, however, two types of bottles you should watch out for:

There are a few different types of nipples and bottles. Your baby isn't going to know what design bottles you're using. How ever there are two bottle types you should watch for.

1.Avoid bottles (or anything) made of glass. They can break easily, and your child will throw his bottle at some point in time!

2. You may also want to avoid the bottles with the plastic liners. These bottles are supposed to reduce the amount of air your baby gets, thus reducing the amount of spit up. There hasn't been any research that proves this belief to be true. Also, sometimes those plastic liners leak. And if you're an environmentalist, need I say anything about the waste of plastic liners?

Clothing Supplies

The primary piece of clothing for your baby will be his diaper, however its really more of a tool then a piece of clothing.. Your only choices in the diaper world are disposable or cloth.

For the rest of babies clothes you can be more creative. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you require this many nighties, this many shirts etc. The rule of thumb is what how ever many of each you have, that's how many is needed. Of course the more you have the less often laundry is required. If you find your child is growing quickly, you can end up with to many clothes and never using them.

Try your best to purchase clothing that is flame retardant, generally only found in pj's. The label should mention if the clothes are flame retardant. Avoid drawstrings, they've been known to get caught in things like elevators, slides, escalators, and could cause your baby to get hurt.

Bathroom Equipment

No, don't go buying a potty for your baby yet! At the least, your babies first bathroom equipment should be a bathtub, more specifically a tub with the sponge lining. They're fantastic for newborns, sturdy, keep the baby at your level, and make bathing the child in the sink easy and safe. Of course the tub isn't a must have, you can still bath your baby in the sink, but the plastic tub is very inexpensive, portable, and easily washed.

Baby Seats

Your baby needs a place to sit, not necessarily small furniture, but a few things just their size. Baby seats are the small chairs you can place your child in when you're attempting to get things done around home. They are light weight enough that you can move them around the house. Often the seats are adjustable so you can have baby lying back, or sitting up right. Some have a bounce to them, and even have little covers over the top to keep the bright sun away.
